How the philosophy of “working with people as human beings first for outcomes that matter” came to be.

This philosophy underpins everything about NH People Coaching & Development.

And take my word for it, it is very, very real. Of course I would say that, but I would

like to explain where it came from.

It’s been an idea in my head for a long time, and it started as ‘working with people as human beings first and job titles second’ and then some one pointed out that the idea is broader than that. It’s actually about working with human beings to help them try and get the most impactful outcomes for them that make a difference to their lives, in whatever context they are in.

Everyone has their own story to tell, and none are more valid or important than

anyone else’s, they are just different. And part of my story has inevitably influenced

this philosophy.

In my time I have been lucky enough to travel to and in some cases live in a number of different countries. Canada, Hong Kong, China, Chile, Germany, France, Italy, Austria, Belgium, Holland, East Germany (as it was then), Switzerland, Thailand etc.

The one common denominator was human beings. You can stand on a street corner (and I have done this) in Central District in Hong Kong, Whitehorse in Canada and Coyhaique in Chile and watch people do their shopping, drive to work and take their kids to school.

They have the same concerns over money, their children’s futures and other such mundanities as everyone else.

In my career I have worked in further education, outdoor education, prison

education, with helicopters, as a gardener, in big businesses, in small businesses, in

charities, in warehouses etc. I have also worked with clients in manufacturing,

aerospace, defence, nuclear, public sector, pharmaceuticals, agriculture, banking,

engineering to name but a few.

Yet again the one common denominator was human beings. I have met royalty,

knights of the realm, politicians, rock stars, peers from the house of lords. I have sat

and drunk tea with people serving life sentences for murder. I have spent time with

soldiers, police officers, doctors, nurses, people who are drug dependant, young

offenders, judges, teachers, people who are suffering from mental illness,

professors, senior leaders and folk that just can’t take it anymore.

Despite whatever badge, label or position they had at that time, they were all human beings who wanted a good outcome in whatever it was that they were doing.

So, if we strip away the fluff that’s what we all are, just human beings sometimes

trying to get a better outcome. When we work together from standpoint, we start tomake real differences to those around us and ourselves.
